Querida Sofia,

Acho que não passou um dia sem que tivesse ido comer fora em Cape Town, fora os dias em que as aulas na University of Cape Town eram muito extenuantes. Houve até lugares onde tive a ocasião de regressar (o que acho o melhor das viagens e tira-nos um pouco da impressão de turista, da qual não sou muito fã).

Except on days where classes where "excrutiatingly tiresome", we went out and about to eat at least once a day in Cape Town, so I have a lot of places to recommend. I even got to opportunity to check a few places twice, which make the dreadful tourist experience less... touristy!

Neighbourhood

7 - Marco's African Place (15 Rose Street): este é um restaurante Africano e, pela denominação, não é o meu tipo de restaurante. Não sei como um estabelecimento pode assumir representar 52 países (sim, África não é um país), mas sei que isto é uma teima pessoal. No entanto, a comida não é má e a avestruz grelhada até que é boa. Tem um ambiente quente e bem eufórico, para quem queira sentir que está em "África", pois é uma sensação que se tem pouco em Cape Town.

Marco's is an African restaurant therefore, it's not really my typical kind of place. I say this because I do not understand restaurants who assume are "African" while Africa is 52-country strong, but anyway, just a personal pet peeve. I added it on the list because the food is okay - they do a mean ostrich - and it's vibrant for people who want to feel they are in "Africa" (because you don't when in Cape Town).

6 - Neighbourhood (163 Long Street): daqueles lugares onde fui duas vezes. Este restaurante/bar/lounge fica na Long Street que é uma das ruas mais vibrantes para as noitadas na Cidade do Cabo. Está sempre apinhado de gente, é preciso subir por cima das mesas para uma empregada de mesa se dar conta que estamos ali (estou a brincar)(quase) mas parece ser um bom lugar para começar a noite e bebericar antes de ir para um lugar melhor. O must: as batatas fritas que são servidas como esparguete. Pena que não tirei uma foto! são tão deliciosas quanto oleosas!

This is one of those places where I had the opportunity to go twice and experience different vibes at. Neighbourhood is a restaurant / bar / lounge that is located in Long Street which is one of the most vibrant streets in CT at night. This place is always filled with people and you have to get on the tables so that the waiters notice you (joke)(no joke), but it is overall a nice place for big groups and to start the evening, while nibbling or having drinks. Their must is their fries! they are served like spaghetti! Such a pity I did not take a picture! They are as good as they are oily.

5 - Cocoa Wah Wah (18 Main Road, in Rondebosch): um lugar para estudantes que queiram fugir da cantina, pertinho da Universidade de Cape Town. Mesas largas, muitos cabos eléctricos para cima e para baixo, muitos computadores e iPads por cima das mesas de madeira e cada pessoa no seu canto a beber café e a escrever frenéticamente. Fui lá duas vezes, e das duas vezes comi um burger. Sim, eu... que nem sou fã de burgers. Abre cedo e fecha tarde: é de se aproveitar na Mother City!

A place for students as it is pretty close to UCT. But just for students who want to avoid the dreadful canteen! Tables are wide, wires are everywhere, you see laptops and iPads everywhere on the wooden tables or on one's lap... everybody is on their little corner of the world and typing frenetically as the minutes go by. I went there twice and had a burger... twice. Yeah, true! and I am not even that a fan of burgers to start with! Good point: it opens early and closes late. That's unusual in the Mother City!

Cocoa Wah Wah

4 - Truth Coffee Cult (1 Somerset Road, at Prestwich Memorial): descobri este lugar graças ao bom velho Foursquare pois precisava esperar nas redondezas por mais de uma hora. Foi uma bela descoberta. Qualquer semelhança com um ambiente oriundo de uma velha fábrica deve ser uma feliz coincidência. O menu é de se salivar por mais, mas o serviço é um pouco lento. Desculpam-se ao dizer que é por fazer tudo de raiz, mas... bom... vale a pena a espera! A minha sandes de frango e bacon com molho agridoce é de sonhar. E, como sempre quando estou na África do Sul, comi com um chocolate branco quente.

I discovered this place through good old Foursquare as I needed to wait around for an hour or so. What a good discovery. I like the old plant vibe that this place conveys. The menu is quite appealing yet the service is a bit slow - they excuse themselves saying it's because they make everything from scratch... okay... worth the wait! My sweet chili chicken & bacon sandwich is something I still dream about. And, as I always do when in South Africa, I had it with a hot white chocolate.

Truth Coffee

3 - Tasha's Waterfront (V&A Waterfront): a decoração deste restaurante é de tirar o ar. E, para ajudar na festa, a comida é excelente e o menu é ecletico. Como parei para almoçar a meio da tarde, já não tinha tanta fome. Fiquei-me por um chocolate branco quente (duh) e uma quesadilla de porco que estava absolutamente divina. O prato era picante, mas pedi sem. Maravilha!

This restaurant's decor is absolutely breathtaking and, as it sure helps, the food is quite good. The menu is pretty extensive for picky eaters! As I was having a late lunch, I wasn't that hungry so settled for a hot white chocolate (duh) and a pulled pork quesadilla! It was supposed to be very spicy but I asked to have the dish without the heat. It was absolutely divine!

Tasha's Waterfront

2 - Truth Coffee HQ (36 Buitenkant Street): parece que me escrevi de novo o mesmo restaurante, mas é normal. Esta é a casa Sede do anterior e tem um ambiente mais escuro, mais ecléctico, mais EU. Fica mesmo em frente ao District Six Museum. Infelizmente, fecha cedo e nunca fui a tempo de lá ir almoçar - então fica a dica para a próxima vez. Mas o ambiente fez com que lá voltasse duas vezes, nem que fosse apenas para um chocolate quente e ficar sentada no sofá à espera que o trânsito se dissipasse.

Looks like I rewrote about the same place, right? but it's normal, as this is the HQ from the former. The ambiance and decor are darker, edgier and... so me! It's right in front of the District Six Museum. Unfortunately, it closes down pretty early and I never got there on time to have a proper meal. But I promised myself I will not miss the opportunity next time.

1 - Orphanage Cocktail Emporium (227 Bree Street): o top do top. Um bar que lembra o Experimental Cocktail Club em Paris, mas em melhor. Muito melhor. Sei que está na minha lista de lugares de passagem obrigatória em Cape Town. Adorei o ambiente, as luzes, a decoração do bar, o tipo de pessoas que estavam a frequentar o bar enquanto lá estavámos e sobretudo da música. Muita ficou por detectar no meu Shazam, mas ficou-me para sempre no coração a "Part of your life" dos Aquilo. Original: o cocktail mais famoso do bar é servido numa chávena de chá.

This bar is just the mother of all bars. My kind of place and I know I will need to check it out every time when in CT. It reminded me of the Experimental Cocktail Club in Paris, but it was better. Way better. I loved the sultry and feutrée ambiance, the lighting, the bar decor and the kind of people I could check out from my couch while sipping my cocktail in a tea cup.
