Querida Sofia,

Vi ontem imagens da Celine Dion (e filhos) no cerimónia funebre pelo marido René Angelil. Há pouca coisa que me agonie mais do que ver uma mulher massacrada pela dor deste tipo de perda. Depois li comentários completamente descabidos... que se casou com um homem mais velho, sabia que o ia enterrar... que deu-se ao espectáculo e não deveria ter tido cerimónia pública... que expôs os filhos... parece que as pessoas não sabem ou se alguma vez souberam, esqueceram o que é o amor.

A Celine não vive no meu iTunes (só cá tenho 1 música dela), mas conheço tantas outras de frente para trás - como quase toda a gente que viveu nos anos 1990 - que decidi colocar aqui as 7 melhores para mim. E claro, pesquisar estas músicas no Youtube já me fizeram viajar até ao passado hoje.

I saw a few pictures of Celine Dion (and her kids) at her husband René Angelil's funeral yesterday... and... I always agonises me tremendously to see a woman dealing with the loss of her love. And the comments I have been reading are atrocious... that if she got married to an older man, she must have known she would bury him... that she should have not participated in such a public funeral cerimony... that she exposed her kids... Sometimes I think people do not know - and if they have ever known, that they have forgotten - what love is really about.

I only have one song by Celine on my iTunes but I know so many of her songs back-to-back - as anyone who lived in the 1990s - that I decided to put here my favourite 7. And of course, browsing these on Youtube already made me travel in time today...

7 - Ziggy

Aprendi esta música de cor na escola. Ouviamos em todas as aulas de educação musical e a cada semana, sabia cada vez melhor a letra. E acho que foi também com esta música que aprendi que há meninos que gostam de meninos (mas não tenho a certeza).

I learned this song's lyrics in school.We used to listen to it in Music Education class and each week, I would know it better and better. I also think I discovered boys could love boys with this song (but not sure).

6 - Tell Him - with Barbra Streisand

Acho que quando esta música foi lançada, eu era nova demais para compreender que estava a ouvir duas divas da música juntas. Outra que me dá pele de galinha de arrepiada.

I think I did not understand (I was too young), when this music was released that I was listening to two of the greatest voices of our time, performing together. This one also gives me goosebumps!

5 - I'm your Angel - with R. Kelly

Estavamos em 1998 e o R. Kelly ainda era um grande músico e não um filho da mãe. Só de ouvir esta música, fico com pele de galinha.

We were 1998 and R. Kelly was still a respectable musician at the time. I have the goosebumps every time I listen to this.

4 - River Deep, Mountain High

Eu sei, eu sei, esta música é da Tina Turner, mas a primeira vez que a ouvi foi cantada pela Celine (e gosto de ambas versões). Que energia tem esta música!

I know, I know, this one is originally by Tina Turner, but the first I heard it was with Celine (and I like both versions). This track just holds so much energy!

3 - Sous le Vent - with Garou

Esta música marcou-me porque foi a primeira que ouvi ao chegar a França pela primeira vez e para viver em Setembro 2001. O Garou estava no auge da carreira com o musical Notre Dame de Paris, a Celine tinha acabado de ter o primeiro filho e a música é apenas linda.

This song always stroke an emotional cord for me as it was the first I heard as I landed for the first time and started living in France in September 2001. Garou was at the peak of his career out of the success of the musical Notre Dame de Paris and Celine had just had her first son. This song is just stunning.

2 - Immortality - feat. the Bee Gees

Acho que demorei a gostar desta música - não compreendia a voz ofegante do vocalista dos Bee Gees - mas hoje é das que mais gosto da Celine. A letra é linda e tal voz ofegante é uma das coisas que mais gosto hoje.

I think I took some time to get this song - I did not understand why the Bee Gees lead singer would have that "out of breath" kind of voice constantly - but today, it really is one of my favourite tracks by Celine. The lyrics are gorgeous and the said voice that use to irritate me is what I like the most today.

Esta é a única música dela que tenho no iTunes. Sempre a oiço quando tenho o coração partido - não a ouvia há algum tempo, então isto dos amores não anda assim tão mal - esta música faz-me lembrar esta do Meatloaf que é das minhas preferidas de sempre e também tem daqueles clipes compridos que já não se fazem, que têm uma história incrível estilo a Bela e o Monstro. Que voz, Celine, que voz!

(já agora, deve ser normal achar as duas músicas parecidas... acabei de descobrir enquanto escrevia isto que foram ambas escritas pelo Jim Steinman... duh!)

This is the only song, by Celine, that I have on my iTunes. I always listen to it when my heart got broken - I have not heard it in some time, this might mean something positive for me. This song reminds me this one by Meatloaf that is also one of my favourites and because it also had this long video clip like you do not see anymore, very Beauty and the Beast style. What a voice, Celine, what a voice!

(by the way, it is kind of normal I always associated both songs... I just discovered as I am writing this post that both were written by Jim Steinman... duh!
