Series | 7 tv shows I am watching this Summer. It means right now.

Depois da edição de Cacimbo que fiz com 7 séries a ver enquanto as maiores séries estão de férias nos EUA, hoje apresento 7 séries para ver durante o verão angolano (está frio onde vocês estão? sortudos!). Todas as séries que apresento são recentes (não têm mais de 2 épocas). Umas são para rir, outras para pensar e outras para chorar! Mas todas de muita qualidade.

After Cacimbo's edition of the 7 tv shows I was watching while my favourite ones were in Summer Hiatus, today I present you 7 others that I am watching this summer. And it does not mean in July-August, it's summer right now in Angola. Is it cold in your end of the world? How lucky! All these shows are relatively recent (none has more than two seasons). A few of these are just for laughs and others require more sensibility and thoughtfulness. But all are very good!

7 - Playing House (Season 1)

Comecei esta série da USA Network agora, mas são vinte minutos de puro riso (e, claro, também há momentos aqui e ali para pensar bastante). Esta série fala sobre duas amigas, uma com a vida familiar estável e a outra com a vida profissional estável. Mas as circunstâncias farão com que essa estabilidade mude para serem mais unidas do que nunca. Vou apenas no 5º episódio, mas nenhum ainda foi aborrecido, bem pelo contrário, tornou-se na série que vejo quando estou um pouco mais em baixo.

I started watching this one from USA Network recently but I can assure you you will spend 20 minutes smiling or laughing. Of course, there are a few poignant moments here and there, but you get my grip. This sitcom is about two friends, one with a stable family life and the other with a stable professional life. But life and circumstances change everything and it makes them become more united than ever before. I have only watch 5 episodes to this point yet it already became by go-to-series when I am feeling a little blue.

Angie Tribeca

6 - Angie Tribeca (Season 1)

Esta série foi lançada recentemente na TBS numa maratona de 25 horas. Todos os episódios de uma só vez. Ainda só vi três e fico contente de, finalmente, depois de The Office e Parks and Rec, que a Rashida Jones tenha um papel com mais destaque. Será fácil comparar o estilo destas séries, aquele humor cheio de inteligência e piadas que podem parecer mortas (mas não o são). E o leque de actores convidados que vão aparecendo em todos os episódios também são um brinde de louvar. Oi James Franco!

This show was recently released by TBS in a marathon event that lasted 25 hours. All the episodes were showed in a row. I have only watched 3 at this point and I am happy that after her stints in The Office and Parks and Rec, Rashida Jones eventually gets the recognition she deserves being the star of this show. It is also easy to compare these shows' style: the very witty and fast humour is the signature dish for all of them. And the cameo and guest actors are also a treat. Hey James Franco!

5 - Younger (Season 2)

Esta série pela TV Land tem actores excelentes: a Sutton Foster, conhecida na Broadway e pela série Bunheads, a Debi Mazar que é uma lenda da tela desde os anos 1980 (e adoro o programa culinário com o marido Gabriele Corcos - eles são um casal absolutamente delicioso!), a Miriam Shor (que faz o papel daquela jornalista chata Mandy Post em The Good Wife). Ah, e é uma criação e produção do Darren Star, responsável por Melrose Place, 90210, Sex and the City... Esta série tem bastante humor, mas por vezes confrontamo-nos de frente com o drama de quem tem de mentir para (sobre)viver.

This TV Land show feature a lot of great actors: Sutton Foster known for her work on stage at Broadway and for the series Bunheads, Debi Mazar who is an absolute legend (and I also dig her cooking show with her husband Gabriele Corcos... they are a stunning couple!), Miriam SHor (you know, that annoying journalist Mandy Post from The Good Wife?). Oh, and the series was created and produced by Darren Star, who is also responsible for other "masterpieces" such as Beverly 90210, Melrose Place, Sex and the City... This show is filled with humour and lightness, yet it gets heavy when we deal with someone lying to live and survive.

Jane the Virgin

4 - Jane the Virgin (Season 2)

Num momento em que tanto se fala de diversidade, não posso deixar de pensar nesta série da The CW, com a Gina Rodriguez (que ganhou o Golden Globe como Protagonista numa série de comédia ou musical em 2015), que tem sido um sucesso não só pela qualidade da escrita quanto pelo enredo multicultural (americanos, hispânicos, israelitas...). Estão a ver aquelas séries que têm um ritmo rápido e nas quais as situações não demoram muitos episódios a se resolverem? É o estilo de Jane the Virgin, com um narrador que é dos mais deliciosos e engraçados (e político também!) de todas as séries que jamais vi.

In a moment we are all thinking about diversity, I cannot not think about this The CW's series with Gina Rodriguez (she won Best Actress in Comedy or a Musical in the 2015 Golden Globes Awards), that is a considerable success not solely for the quality of its writing but also because of the diversity of its cast (caucasians, hispanics, israelis...). You know those shows that are fast-paced and do not delve into impending situations for a whole season? That is Jane The Virgin's style! and the narrator, oh my! he is the funniest, the most delicious and most political show narrator ever!

Code Black

3 - Code Black (Season 1)

O marketing desta série da CBS foi que não seria um Grey's Anatomy. Que iriam mostrar o mundo da medicina norte-americana exactamente como ela é: escura, suja, sofrida, desenfreada, feita sem condições e no pânico constante. E funciona... a qualidade da escrita e dos casos é de louvar, mas... não vejo ver como ser uma série sobre medicina anti-Grey's Anatomy é um cunho de qualidade, mas sei que isso deve ser daquelas guerras internas americanas quanto à qual não me quero vergar. Quanto a Code Black, fica uma ovação de pé para a Marcia Gay Harden, o Raza Jaffrey e o Luis Guzmán.

The marketing for this CBS show was basically... that it would not be like Grey's Anatomy. It would show an American hospital exactly like it is: dark, dirty, painful, hectic, lacking resources and made in sheer panic. Constantly. And it really works... the writing and the cases are beautifully filmed, but... why is it so important to not be Grey's Anatomy anywa? This must be an American feud that I did not get into yet. My favourite actors, who deserve constant standing ovations are Marcia Gay Harden, Raza Jaffrey and Luis Guzmán.

American Crime, Season 1

2 - American Crime (Season 1 & Season 2)

Esta série da ABC, a cada época, pega os mesmos actores, mas muda todos os personagens, locais e enredos, como se estivéssemos a ver outra série. A primeira época que vi em poucos dias fez-me chorar, ficar com raiva e admirar como nunca a performance daqueles actores tremendos. Uma pessoa passa os episódios todos a querer descobrir o crime, a começar com um culpado que muda a cada episódio, a cada nova conversa. Além da escrita profunda e intrigante, o estilo da fotografia é de relevar. Aqueles shots cruzados, focados num pedaço do corpo e/ou enquanto ouvimos a conversa de um interlocutor invisível deixam-nos desconfortáveis .. exactamente como os personagens. Comecei recentemente a segunda época e todas as semanas corro para ver o novo episódio pois quero descobrir mais e mais e mais. Esta série tem um elenco tremendo, como a Felicity Huffman (fiquei fã dela desde que vi Transamerica), a Regina King, o Timothy Hutton, o Richard Cabral (brutal) e o Elvis Nolasco (tremendo). Ah, e a banda sonora de cada episódio é maravilhosa! A ver e ouvir!

This ABC series keeps the same actors every season but switches up the settings, characters and stories as if we were watching a whole different series. I watched the first season in days and it made me cry, be mad at the screen and admire, as never before, the talent of those incredible actors. One gets hooked to it to discover who comitted the crime: first you have an idea, than something changes or someone presents something new and you have to rethink it all over again. Not only is the writing intriguing and meaningful, the photography direction takes one's breath away. Those side shots, focused on a part of the actors' body and/or face, while we listen to the monologue by an invisible character... it's so deep and leaves us so uncomfortable... I just started season 2 and I always am eager to get a new episode. This show has an incredible cast: Felicity Huffman (I have been a fan of hers since Transamerica), Regina King, Timothy Hutton, Richard Cabral (he's mesmerising) and Elvis Nolasco (he's incredible). Oh, and every episode's OST is also on point. To watch and to listen to!

American Crime, season 2

1 - The Affair (Season 2)

Vi esta série do Showtime no final de 2015. Vi as duas épocas em poucos dias, que devorei a uma velocidade luz... "binge-watching" é definitivamente o meu nome do meio! O melhor desta série, além do enredo, é o facto de cada episodio ter dois pontos de vista. Nunca ficamos apenas com o ponto de vista de uma pessoa e ficamos sempre a suspeitar "mas qual a verdade? quem está a fantasiar? em que ponto de vista devo confiar?". Rapidamente colamos os pedaços e conseguimos compreender o que realmente aconteceu. Mas esta série chegou para provar uma coisa muito simples: numa situação entre A e B, há sempre a verdade de A, a verdade de B e a terceira verdade, que os mais religiosos chamarão "verdade de Deus".

I binge-watched this show from Showtime at the very end of 2015. Binge-watching is my middle name, ya know... I saw the two seasons in just a couple of days and was completely obsessed. The best about this series is that you get the story from two points of view at each episode. We never just have a single POV and then we ask ourselves "but who is saying the truth? what is the truth? who is dealing with sheer fantasy?". Then we put the pieces back together and we try to get what really happened. But this show just confirmed one thing: in a situation between A and B, you have A's truth, B's truth and the third truth or as some call it, "God's truth".
